The star cluster NGC 6604 is shown in this new image taken by the Wide Field Imager attached to the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. It is often overlooked in favor of its more prominent neighbor, the Eagle Nebula (also known as Messier 16), that lies a mere wingspan away. But the framing of this picture, which places the star cluster in a landscape of surrounding gas and dust clouds, shows what a beautiful object NGC 6604 is in its own right. [...]

NASA said on Wednesday its Dawn spacecraft has revealed new details about the surface of the asteroid Vesta. The space agency said its spacecraft shows new images and data of the diversity of Vesta’s surface, revealing unusual geological features. Vesta is one of the brightest objects in the solar system and sits in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, visible to the naked eye from Earth. Dawn has found that some areas on the asteroid can be nearly twice as bright as others, which gives scientists clues about the asteroid’s history. [...]

NASA astronaut Suni Williams will announce Thursday the two winners of the YouTube Space Lab contest, a global science competition that challenges 14-18 year-old students to design a science experiment for the International Space Station. The awards ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. EDT in the Newseum's Knight Room at 555 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. in Washington. Thousands of individuals and teams from more than 80 countries entered the competition to have their experiment flown in space. Three videos. On 29 November 1967, Australia became only the fourth country – after the USA, Soviet Union and France – to launch its own satellite from its own territory. The battery-powered WRESAT weighed about 45 kilograms and was designed in the form of a cone. Three cones (two test and one actual) were constructed in the development phase, and a range of tests were carried out to ensure the satellite’s durability. As well as the durability tests, the final experiment shown in this clip tests the ejection of the protective plate covering the instrumentation during flight. In the early days of rocket and satellite work, countless experiments were lost due to the failure of covers to eject. [...]

UpLift 1 Mission Announced. As you may have realized, I love space and I have a real desire to be involved in Do-It-Yourself space missions. This is a part of that process. I am announcing my first weather balloon project - a series that I have named UpLift for rather obvious reasons. The mission progress and outcome will be posted here as it progresses. Currently I am working with a Primary School and a Secondary College here in Sydney, Australia and I hope to include a local school in the middle of NSW.
