Spot the Space Station and Shuttle Together: One hour after sunset I looked up on the Internet to find where the ISS & shuttle were located. I realised they were 10 minutes away from Sydney, Australia. I grabbed the kids and went to the park next to our house and right on schedule the 2 appeared. The shutle ahead of the ISS I assume (given the relative brightness of each). If I outstretched my arm and spead my index and little fingers apart - that was about the separation. A marvelous coincidence and great timing. The kids really loved it an wrote about it on their Facebook pages.

I was 20 when we landed there the first time (1969). Just because we did it once back then doesn't mean we could do it again. You have to crawl before you can walk before you can run and so on. Go back to the moon to prove we can do it again. It also makes much more sense to use the moon as a departure point for other solar system destinations because there is a much lower gravity load to escape the moon than the earth. Plus the moon has water frozen at the lunar poles that can be used for fuel (oxygen and hydrogen). If we can't mine the frozen water on the moon to make rocket fuel, what makes anyone think we would be able to do it any easier anywhere else? Explore your own backyard before you leave the neighborhood. When we did it in 1969 the computers we used were as powerful as a digital watch. With the technology we have now it should be easier and safer, right? Not necessarily! There is a certain confidence in old analog systems as opposed to our current all digital environment. It's cave man logic. I'd rather defend myself with a real stick than with a virtual stick.

Thanks for the reply Robert. I'm an experienced space engineer/operator with some recent work in the crossover between media, entertainment, and education. Understand your point though, about interpersonal issues. But consider the different kinds reality TV shows. The "Big Brother" approach will not be about space/science, but about negative drama. Instead, try the "Masterchef Australia"/"So you think you can dance" approach. Take normal people with talent, getting exceptional training to excel in an area they're passionate about. The focus becomes the passion to excel, which has a very personal dimension to everyone. Both can be profitable, but only the latter will show the field in a respectful light.
