Apollo 1
 Apollo 1 Crew Left to right: Gus Grissom, Ed White, Roger Chaffee Apollo 1 is the name the Apollo mission that never flew. The command module was destroyed by fire during a training exercise on January 27, 1967 at Pad 34 known as Cape Kennedy at the time. The module was attached to the top of a Saturn IB rocket. The crew aboard had been selected for the first manned Apollo program mission.
They were Command Pilot Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Senior Pilot Ed White and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee. All three died in the fire.
No one really knows what actually caused the fire, but the deaths were caused by many factors. There were many lethal design hazards in the early Apollo command module. Among these were the use of a high-pressure 100 percent-oxygen atmosphere for the test. The others were wiring and plumbing flaws, flammable materials in the cockpit , an inward-opening hatch that would not open in this kind of an emergency and the astronauts flight suits.
Former astronauts are those who have left NASA after a career in the Astronaut Corps, including those who are deceased.
